Crocker Mosaic is a 9:30-minute HD video with stereo sound, animation by Rachel Clarke, and music composed by Stephen Blumberg. It was commissioned by the Crocker Art Museum for the opening of its new museum extension in October 2010.
Members of the Crocker Art Museum were invited to submit images of their artwork for inclusion. The process was not juried; all 800 submitted works were included. The artworks were used to create individual tiles that combined to form a visual and architectural mosaic.
In the same way, the music was created from small motifs and patterns that form a larger sonic texture through cells, replication, imitation, inversion, and layering.
